The Presence of God …. JANUARY 12, 2020

Draw near to God and his will draw near to you. James 4:8 ESV

What does the Bible mean when it speaks about being in the presence of God, or that the presence of God has left? Being in the presence of God is walking in fellowship with Him and living in obedience to His will. God’s presence withdraws when the practice of willful sin is in the camp or an individual’s life. I say the latter because God does not have fellowship with sin. The key word here is fellowship. In reality there is no place in the universe that God’s seeing eyes cannot see; however, seeing and having fellowship are two completely different things. Sin grieves God, while fellowship, worship, and praise of Him are blessings to Him. Understand that the love God has for us does not diminish because of sin, for the Bible teaches that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ESV God, however, did not send Jesus to die so that we might continue to live in willful sin. When Jesus healed or forgave a person, he would say…. “sin no more.” (John 4:14 & 8:11) Sin has and will always separate us from God’s abiding presence and fellowship. When Jesus died on the cross, he paid once and for all the debt of sin owed in each person’s life. What sin took away, God restored through His Son…. Jesus. Seeking to be in God’s presence is to seek what brings Him the greatest pleasure, and then pursue or do it. This effort should be a daily and life-long endeavor, desiring to bring Him glory. So where is a good place to begin?

SEEK:

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! 1 Chronicles 16:11 ESV …….Seek the Lord and his strength: seek his presence continually. Psalm 105:4 ESV

God is not hiding from us so that we cannot find him. God desires for you to seek after Him as you would seek precious treasure, for God knows a person will pursue whatever they deem valuable. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV Life is not about just being good so that you might make it to heaven. It is about walking in the sweet presence and fellowship with God right now. There is no sin in your life worth losing the presence of God. Note in the two verses above that strength comes with His presence. Satan knows if he can cause you to seek other things, he can make you weak and vulnerable in your walk. So seek God as you would treasure, for He should be the treasure of your heart.

SING:

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; Let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! Psalm 95:2 ESV …… Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Psalm 100:2 ESV

It is not hard to sing, but the singing that God enjoys is not just entertainment for Him but genuine worship and praise of Him. When walking in the presence of God, our heart cannot help but do just that, sing of His glory. When walking in His presence, we will see things differently and will come to him with a thankful heart for all he has done and is doing.

APPLICATION:

Read the Word with the purpose of seeking to live for Him. Do this with the purpose of drawing near to Him for the strength to go and sin no more. In small and large victories sing praises to Him, that He may know the sound of your voice. Remember the words of James 4:8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. (ESV)
