THE BIBLE IS APPLICABLE TODAY ….. March 1, 2020

All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. 2 Timothy 3:16

In recent days, I have heard more than one individual express that the Bible is no longer relevant for today in its entirety. Just a few days ago I listened to a popular speaker express this in one of his teachings. From more than one source, I have heard it said that, “The Bible was written for a time and culture different from ours today.” I understand that it was written in a different time and different culture than we currently experience, but the principles which it teaches are as relevant today as any time in history past, or in the future that has yet to be experienced. I once had a college professor make this statement, “The Bible doesn’t mean what it says, it means what it means.” Let me explain….Jesus was teaching in Mark 9:433-45 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off….if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off……If your eye causes you to sin, tear it out. If you take this as literal and not the principle which Jesus was teaching…. more than likely only a few people, if any at all, would make it into heaven. What Jesus was teaching is the importance of not living in sin and HOW SERIOUS we should act toward our sin. Don’t handle things that cause you to sin…. Don’t walk or go to places where you are prone to sin….. don’t look or stare at things that cause you to sin…..cut off and get rid of anything in your life that causes you to sin. That is the principle of this verse. However, we also must know that there are some passages in the Bible that mean exactly what they say. Don’t steal… Don’t covet… Do not commit adultery……. These are not in principle, but rather with clear meaning and interpretation. Also people have said the God of the old Testament was cruel, destroying whole groups of people. Fact is….yes he did. I will not pretend to understand the mind of God, but this I still know; HI IS GOD! So how do I learn the principles of what God was doing in the Old Testament? First let me say I am glad I live in this season of history….. via the New Testament and grace. In my limited understanding of God, this is what the scriptures have taught me. When I look at the Old Testament, I see the seriousness of sin and the process by which sin will be judged…. by the righteousness of God’s standard. If a person lives intentionally and without remorse in a sinful lifestyle, that person will reap the results. The Bible also teaches there is no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood. Under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22 ESV We read about animal sacrifices in the Old Testament which to us today seems cruel, but God required this to receive forgiveness and to make us understand that sin causes…. death… not just for us but for everything and everyone. If you do not see the seriousness of sin, you will not appreciate the sacrifice God made sending his only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross in our place.

Breathed Out By God:

The Bible was written by different men but it was done so by the instruction and guidance of the Holy Spirit ….. the very breath of God spoke the Bible into existence,’ guiding the hands of men to write. When we read the Bible, we are reading words of God to us, giving us a glimpse of His love, character, holiness and more than one could ever write. By faith we believe the Bible will instruct us in the way God would have us live, move, and have our being. (Acts 17:28)

Profitable For Teaching:

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, TEACHING and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thanksgiving in your heart to God. Colossians 3:16 ESV You can only teach what you know and you can only know if you study the Bible. Be diligent to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 CSB The Holy Spirit will open the truth of God’s word in your life, that you might teach others by how you walk, speak, and live, by giving evidence of His presence in your life.

For Reproof:

Reproof is the expression of disapproval. The Christian should never teach anything of which God would disapprove. Christians should desire to be God-pleasers not man-pleasers. If a person does not believe the Bible is applicable for today, they will not study to know how God is leading in every aspect of life but only what they believe to be true. Let us never forget the proverb…There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death. Proverbs 14:12 & 16 :25 ESV

For Correction:

If a person is going in the wrong direction and you know the way to a particular destination, would you not tell them? Life is a journey of which at the end there are only two destinations at which a person may arrive. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 ESV If you know, believe, and understand it is a road map so to speak. It keeps you going in and understanding the correct way to God the Father. There is only one road that leads to God and builder and designer of this road is God himself through his Son….Jesus.

For Training In Righteousness:

Righteousness is the quality of being morally right or justifiable. The Bible is clear as to how a person should conduct themselves in daily living. We could never be righteous in and of ourselves, for we are made righteous in Christ Jesus. To live righteously we must be trained in righteousness according to God’s standards. The person whom we should pattern our life after is Jesus, for He was the righteousness of God manifested before us. (Romans 3:21-26) The old hymn says it best, “While passing thro’ this world of sin, And others your life shall view, Be clean and pure without, within; Let others see Jesus in you.”

Application:

Believe. By faith believe the Bible is applicable for today, and that it is God’s word teaching us how we should live. In believing, don’t just read it, but apply it in daily living even when it may be difficult. Remember you are under grace and that the Bible isn’t just a rule book but a book showing us how we can express our love for God by following Him according to the principles and teachings He’s given us.
