Taste….. August 9, 2020

Oh taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him! Psalm 34:8 ESV

What’s your taste? Do prefer delicacies, sweets, veggies, meats, or just whatever? Have you ever heard the statement, “You are what you eat or drink?” Our diets can and will affect our health and life in general. Some people are extremely cautious in their choice of food and drink, while others throw caution to the wind. Obviously the afore description is referring to physical food and drink, but the same principles apply involving spiritual food and drink for the soul. What if, every day, a person chose healthy foods over the unhealthy foods in their diet? I would dare say it would change their life, especially if they had unhealthy eating habits. We know how to evaluate food for the body, whether it is healthy or not, but how do we do this in regards to spiritual food. Spiritual food is evaluated based upon light or darkness. The light refers to the things of God, and darkness, to the things of the Devil. Light is described as good and darkness as evil. The day we were born into this world our diet was established for us by our parents. When we were born again into the family of God, He established the spiritual diet for our lives. So let us, as disciples, eat spiritually healthy…. the food as provided by God.

God’s Word:

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger." John 6:35a ESV

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. John 1:1 ESV……. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 ESV……. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. John 6:51 ESV

Jesus was God’s word in the flesh. He lived a perfect life and fulfilled all the requirements of God for the forgiveness of sin. The food of his word of which we partake is belief in him. This is the first and most important step as followers. To receive the word/food God provided is done by believing in His Son Jesus whom he sent..… the word becoming flesh.

Partake of Light:

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105 ESV …. I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 ESV The light of God’s word will cause us to be spiritually healthy when we take it into our hearts. As good food strengthens the body the word of God will strengthen our walk with him.

You Are What You Eat:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20 ESV If you feast on the evils of this world and call it good because you deem it good, you are feasting on the bitterness of evil. When you implant evil reasoning into your mind, the mind will digest it and only bring forth more evil. The opposite of this would be true as well. When we look to the word of God, we taste and see that he is good. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Psalm 119:103 ESV When the word of God is digested in our minds it should produce holy results in the life of a believer. (1 Peter 1:13-16)

Application:

Read Psalms Chapter 1… 119:33-37….1 Peter 2:2-3 ….. Pray and ask God to let this be true of your life.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Matthew 5:6 ESV
