Near To God … February 21, 2021

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. James 4:8 ESV

How does one draw near to God? Drawing near to God is not knowing about him, but rather it is to know him personally as your Lord and your Savior. There is no formula in drawing near to God that I or anyone else could give you, but there are biblical principles instructing us and leading us in the journey to draw near to him. I like to refer to it as a journey because that is exactly what life is… a journey. Do not misunderstand; I’m not saying as a follower of Jesus that he is not with you, but to have a keen awareness of his nearness happens through an intentional walk desiring his presence. May I give you some basic principles in this journey?

Delight & Desires:

Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 ESV.

As people, we normally will delight ourselves in what our heart desires. When our heart desires something, we will do whatever we believe necessary to accomplish that desire. This desire could apply to material objects, relationships, financial success, or ____________ (fill in the blank). People will delight in their successes when achieving a given desire for which they worked hard to accomplish. There is nothing wrong with objects, relationships, financial success, or whatever, as long as they have not become what you worship. We must always remember what Jesus said, For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” Mark 8:36 ESV. God’s expectation has not changed….. You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3 ESV In life’s journey, as a believer, the greatest desire should be to be near to God. If God is not your delight, then you are not experiencing the sweet communion that comes from being near him. One other important fact I believe to be true…. When you delight in the Lord your heart’s desires will change to align with his.

Seek:

With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments. Psalm 119: 10 ESV

It is important, as disciples, that in faith we seek him in order to walk with him. Without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6 ESV. We don’t seek just to know about him, but we seek him to know and to walk with him. When you do not seek him, you will have a tendency to wander from him. This is why I encourage you and myself to intentionally seek him.

Treasure:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Matthew 6:21 ESV. Do you want to know what you treasure?… What do you value most in life? How tightly do we hold things of earth? May we hold loosely anything that weighs us down in our journey Home. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth or rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20 ESV…….. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, WHERE CHRIST IS, seated at THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD. Set your minds on things above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 ESV

Application:

The following are just a few Bible truths and principles to follow when desiring to draw near to God.

Be doers of the word, and not hearers only…. James 1:22 ESV

As I’ve stated many times, let us live our lives as disciples…. on purpose.

I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 CSB

Treasure Him above everything and anyone else.

Pray without ceasing. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV

Ask God to do a work in your life, causing you to walk according to his will, that you might bring much glory to him.

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13 ESV

Search the scriptures, not to know about God, but to know him. The better you know him, the greater evidence of his nearness to you that you will experience.
