His Face ..... August 30, 2020

One thing I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4

Your face, Lord, do I seek. Psalm 27:8b ESV

I have heard it said beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People will travel great distances to behold beauty that they assume they can not see every day where they live. A person might say, “They have the most beautiful sunset in (fill in the blank)”. Truth is, it’s the same sun, yet in the right setting, we see it totally differently. The sun always sets in the west every evening and rises in the east every morning. So no matter where you are in its rising and setting, the beauty is there. A person only needs to intentionally observe it and seek the beauty it displays. So it is with the beauty of the Lord. A person needs to intentionally gaze upon his face to see the beauty. Also, remember if you are gazing upon his face you are seeing him from a different perspective than a person who is not looking or seeking his beauty. To look into his face is to be in his presence. As a Christian, it should be his perpetual presence we desire to experience every moment of every day. To dwell in the house of the Lord = His presence......all the days of my life = every moment of every day. So what can we see when we look upon his face?

A Face Of Grace:

Thomas found grace when seeing the face of the Lord. We refer to him as doubting Thomas because he did not believe the other disciples when they told him they had seen the Lord. Thomas said, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” John 20:25 ESV. It was some eight days later when Thomas and the disciples were together in a locked room and Jesus appeared to them. Jesus addresses Thomas directly saying,. Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” John 20:27 ESV Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:28-29 ESV.

How beautiful to experience the grace of God through his Son Jesus. Jesus could have scolded Thomas for his lack of faith, but instead reached out to Thomas in the middle of his doubt. Grace is giving something beautiful to someone who does not deserve it. We too have experienced the face of grace. As Thomas did by seeing..... we have by faith. For by grace you have been saved through faith. Ephesians 2:8 ESV. Jesus came to us and spoke grace into our lives instead of giving us what we deserved. That is the face of grace..... beautiful!!!

A Face Of Forgiveness:

Peter and the disciples that fled the night of Jesus' arrest experienced the face of forgiveness. The Lord had told Peter that he would deny Him three times before the rooster crowed. Peter said to him, Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you! And all the disciples said the same. Matthew 26:35 ESV Yet when the time of the arrest came.... they ran. What sorrow and regret they all must have felt, especially Peter. That night, upon denying Jesus for the third time and hearing the rooster crow... Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. Matthew 26:75 ESV. Think about this for a minute, Jesus was going to die for a sin Peter had not even yet committed. Sound familiar? It should, it describes us. That’s the face of forgiveness that a follower of Jesus can see. Beautiful isn’t it? To think that... every sin a person committed before they came to know Jesus was forgiven and every sin after they came to know him is also forgiven. Do not misunderstand... a person does not sin that grace should abound; God forbid. (Romans 6:1) Yet Jesus dying for us knowing of our future failures is a forgiveness that is un-comprehendible, but that is the face of forgiveness..... beautiful!!!

A Face of Love:

In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 4:10 ESV. Every person who is a disciple /follower of Jesus knows this face. It is the face that looked up at Zacchaeus. The face that looked upon the woman caught in the act of adultery. The face that looked down from the cross and through the corridors of time saying, “Forgive them, they know not what they do.” It is the love of God..... but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ESV It is the face of God... That so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. John 3:16 ESV. This is the face of love...... beautiful!!!

Application:

1. Pray Psalm 27:4 & 8. Ask and seek to dwell in the presence of the Lord for all the days God gives you upon this earth. That YOU might gaze upon all the beauty of his face.

2. Go to u-tube or another source and listen to the song by Keith Green: “Oh Lord You’re Beautiful.” Let the words ring in your heart as an act of worship to God. If you are not able to access that media let me write them down here for you to say to the Lord.

Oh Lord, you’re beautiful

Your face is all I seek

For when your eyes are on this child

Your grace abounds to me.

I wanna take your word and shine it all around

But first, help me just to live it, Lord

And when I’m doing well, help me to never seek a crown

For my reward is giving glory to you

Oh Lord, please light the fire

That once burned bright and clear

Replace the lamp of my first love

That burns with holy fear.
