God’s Word… Is Our Shield And Refuge….. October 25, 2020

Every word of God proves true (pure; CSB ); he is a shield to those who take refuge (put  their trust; NKJV) in him. Proverbs 30:5 ESV

What is your motive in reading the Bible?  Perhaps you look for scriptures to help develop a theological view of God.  Maybe you desire to know God better and in reading you hope to see him afresh each day.  Perhaps you read seeking words of encouragement, comfort, and relief from life’s experiences.   Whatever your reason for reading the Bible, it is important to remember; the Bible has been given to us by God that we might receive a glimpse of him.  It is, I believe, the most important way God communicates with us.  We must remember and know…….   Every word of God proves true;——— pure. Proverbs 30:5a.  The word of God is not words compiled by man but has been breathed by God.  All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof,  for correction, and for training in righteousness.  2 Timothy 3:16 ESV.  ………….  The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. Psalm 12: 6 ESV.  When you hold a Bible in your hand, it is a diary of history, instruction for the present, and filled with anticipation of things yet to be.  It is God’s word to us in written form, and it is all that 2 Timothy 3:16 proclaims to be.   We have the account of the word becoming flesh and dwelling among us.  (John chapter 1). ….. Jesus.  This is when God’s word put on skin and bones and displayed for us how we are to live.  Another way of saying it is this…  God didn’t just say "do as I told you", but he also said, "do as I have shown you".  When we believe the words of God in print, then he will become for us what we absolutely need this day and every day until our home going.

A SHIELD:

The purpose of a shield is protection.  God’s word is intended to protect us from making and living in decisions that have negative consequences.  Have you ever heard someone make the comment, “If I’d only listened.”  Do you suppose Adam and Eve might have thought some version of that statement? Remember the shield of protection of which I am speaking is not physical, but a shield for our minds.  When the word of God is used to shield the mind, it protects us physically as well because the Spirit of God has directed our steps.  This is the shield as described in Ephesians 6:16 ESV In all circumstances take up the SHIELD OF FAITH, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.  Faith is trusting, believing, and walking in the true and pure word of God as the authority in your life.  TRUST … Whoever gives thought to the word will discover good, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord. Proverbs 16:20 ESV.   BELIEVE….  When you received the word of God, which you received from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers.  1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV   WALK …. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.  Psalms 119:105 ESV

A REFUGE:

When we think of a refuge, we think of a place of safety or protection from a storm.  There are animal refuges where no hunting is allowed and the animals live in the safety and protection of the guarding of such a refuge.  Our minds need such a place.  A place we can take refuge in knowing that we are protected by God.  The Christian who follows Jesus, who was the word made flesh, can know such a place.  Jesus said, “Come to me, all who are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11: 28 ESV

Here are some scriptures reminding us, as his disciples, of this truth.

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation my stronghold. Psalm 18:2 ESV

God is our refuge and strength, a very present helping trouble. Psalm 46:1 ESV

APPLICATION:

Read Psalm 91… the whole chapter.

Use the concordance in the back of your Bible and look up all the references referring to the word refuge.   If you have an on-line Bible with the ability to word search, type in the word “refuge” and read all the verses teaching about God as your refuge.    Memorize or write down a verse that brings the most comfort and use it when you are overwhelmed with thoughts or life situations.   Remember the refuge to which we go is the word of God for it is true and pure.  The 23rd Psalms is such a chapter reminding us of this fact.

In the climate of our day, let me remind you of an important fact and in doing so I hope it will redirect any anxiety you may have.   It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man.  It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. Psalm 118:8-9 ESV
