GOD’S PURPOSE ….. July 26, 2020
Do you believe that God has purpose for everything that happens in this world? Perhaps you believe God created everything and is simply observing his creation with little or no participation. The first view believes God is in total control, but from a human stand point the question arises, why does he allow bad things to happen? The second view presumes God is passive and does not participate whatsoever. So which view is correct? Of this I am sure…. God is not passive but actively involved with, and in his creation. It would be an understatement to say, “ I don’t understand why God allows certain things to happen.” In truth, however, am I supposed to understand, or do I just trust? Questions, questions, questions, so many questions involving this topic. Do you know why we have questions? It is because God has made us with the capacity to reason and think. Our reasoning and thinking will be guided by our perception of God. Let me make clear that our perception of God does not change who God is. So it would behoove you to seek answers to the above questions as a seeker. In fact this is a life-long quest, for it will affect you and those around you in the present and in eternity. So let us begin to seek answers together. Understand, the following only scratches the surface, for whole books could be written and have been written on this subject.
God And Purpose:
To believe God has purpose in everything, is to believe in the sovereignty of God. Sovereignty by definition means supreme power and authority. No matter your perception of God, this is an accurate description of God and thankfully so. May I encourage you here to let your perception be guided by the Bible…. God’s word to us. The reason I say this is because of this verse…. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 ESV The Bible will teach you the way God would have you live—that your life has value, and the fact that God has a purpose for you. David, in Psalm 57:2 ESV says, “I cry out to God Most high, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” A timeless verse we reflect upon concerning God and purpose in our life today is Romans 8:28 ESV And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Note a very important part of this verse….. for those who LOVE God. When a person loves God they will view and do life differently.
First, don’t blame God for evil because evil is the result of man’s choice. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. Genesis 6:5 ESV Evil could be described as the absence of God’s goodness. When asking the question , “Why does God allow evil?” The answer is …he doesn’t. One of many times in which God dealt with the evil of man was when he sent a flood and destroyed everything upon the earth, except what was saved on the Ark. (Genesis 6:9-22) Be careful what you ask for and think. Always remember…. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being temped by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. James 1:13-14 ESV God does not allow evil and one day will judge the world based upon the standard of his Holiness. The reason, at least for right now, that God appears to allow evil, is mercy and grace. The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. Psalm 103: 8-12 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me , and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13 ESV These verses were written by Jeremiah to the surviving elders, priests, prophets and people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile in Babylon. They longed to be back in Jerusalem and these were words of hope and promise from the Lord. Today, Satan has taken many captive by sin, yet there is a future, hope, and deliverance made available by God. God sent his Son to deliver us and provide salvation from sin and death. God’s purpose is that all who believe and call upon the name of Jesus will be saved. ( Romans 10: 9-13) The Lord will deal with all sin and evil, but again it is for mercy that he tarries in his promised return. I have heard many discuss the return of Jesus as something every generation has discussed and some might be tempted to grow weary, BUT DON’T!!!! Remember why he has not yet come. Do not overlook the one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, NOT WISHING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL SHOULD REACH REPENTANCE. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved , and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 2 Peter 3:8-10 ESV
