Feeling Verses Knowing ….. July 12, 2020
What a person feels can be a very important part of life. When a person feels sick, they may need medical assistance. A happy person may be prone to laugh. Sadness may cause tears to stream down one’s cheeks. Love is often referred to as a feeling; and while it can be described as a feeling, it is also a choice a person makes. While feelings are important, they can also be deceptive. Our feeling can cause us to think, act, and believe things which do not align with truth. For example: we may have bad feelings toward a person because of a perceived thought about that person, yet when communicating with that person, you realize your perception caused you to have feelings that were in error. You may feel fearful in certain situations, but then realize there was really nothing to fear. The analogies could go on, but I believe you get the point. With that thought there are many feelings people have toward Christianity … some true…. some not true. I will touch on just a few.
Feeling You Are Good Enough To Go To Heaven:
If you feel this concerning yourself, you are in danger. As the old adage goes, “Close enough only works for hand grenades and horse shoes.” If you believe you are good enough apart from Jesus, then you are saying that his death was unnecessary for you. You have become your own god, judging what is good enough. This is what the Bible teaches.
Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 9:22b ESV……. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us. Ephesians 1:7-8a ESV When Jesus was in the upper room with his disciples he said, “ This is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Matthew 26:28 ESV Jesus said at another time in his teachings…. “I am the way. and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 ESV
Feeling You Could Never Be Good Enough To Be A Christian:
I have met many people who have said, “I do not feel I could ever become a Christian, because I could never be good enough.” That feeling would be true, for without the work of God, no one could be a Christian. When reading the Bible, you will find no one has ever been good enough apart from the work of God, to become a Christian. That is the reason for the verse.. For by GRACE you have been been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the GIFT OF GOD, not a result of works, so that NO ONE may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 ESV The reason a person feels they could never be good enough is because they could never be good enough. If you let your feelings control your thoughts, you will never come to the point of faith believing in the work that God did for you. It is not something you can earn…it is A GIFT. Your feeling as stated above is correct, but you don’t have to die there, for God made a way of escape from that feeling. Jesus, His Son, did the work we could never do. He is THE WAY!!!!
Feeling You Could Lose Your Salvation :
I have met those who feel that you can lose your salvation, and perhaps you struggle with that thought. This could be a teaching all its own, but let me give some brief exclamations as to why your feeling is misleading. First, if you didn’t do anything to merit salvation from God, because it was a gift, then the moment after you received the gift, and you had to work in order to keep it, then it is no longer a gift. Any work after salvation is not a work to keep it, but a WORK of LOVE for God for what he did for you. It is as the woman who anointed Jesus’s feet… Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven-for SHE LOVED MUCH Luke 7:47 ESV
Second, God who is able to save you is strong enough to hold on to you. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and NO ONE WILL SNATCH THEM OUT OF MY HAND. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, AND NO ONE IS ABLE TO SNATCH THEM OUT OF THE FATHER’S HAND. John 10:28-29 ESV Third, By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit 1 John 4:13 ESV…. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba! Father! The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. Romans 8:15-16 ESV When believing you could lose your salvation, it is believing you are just one sin too many for God to be able to hold on to you. Always remember you will be judged as a Christian NOT on your righteousness, but upon the righteous blood of Christ in which you are covered. His blood is powerful enough to save you, and it is powerful enough to keep you. Let me make one final note on this point for I have heard many say, “Then I can just go do whatever I want because I could never lose my salvation.” Paul addressed this in Romans 6: 1 ESV— What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! Paul also wrote this. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. Romans 6:12-13 ESV Let me also make this point … It is a spiritual impossibility to sin successfully as a Christian… sin….. yes…successfully…no. The reason… you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and there will be a conflict when sin attempts to dwell where the Spirit lives. That is why it is called spiritual warfare. ( Ephesians 6: 10-20)
I realize I only scratched the surface on feelings people have today vs. Bible teaching, but let me make clear, what we feel does not nullify Biblical truth. It is not a book of opinion, it is God’s word to us. With that, let me address each teaching from above.
Good Enough…. If this is your feeling, and you want to know if it is true, then with a genuine seeking for truth, pray and ask God to show you. Use the Bible to look for his answer.
Not Good Enough…. You are at a great starting point, for you have an understanding of who you are compared to God’s Holiness. Just don’t let Satan keep deceiving you. Pray and seek God through his redemptive work in his Son Jesus. A good place to start… Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Acts 2:21 ESV Also look up 1 John 1:9 … Romans 10:9-10…. Acts 4:12
Losing Salvation… Salvation never depended upon us, it has and always will depend upon what God has done. Study your Bible on the topic of his redemption. You will never find a place where it depended upon you. But if it is grace, it is no longer the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. Romans 11:6 ESV A good place to start in living / loving God … Romans 12:1-2
