Enjoying God ..... April 5, 2020

Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted on the earth! Psalm 46:10 ESV

I was thinking the other day just how personal God should be to each one of us, especially as Christians. I know when we go to church, we enjoy sweet fellowship with each other, but what about with God? May we never be so distracted that we forget the reason we do what we do. I have missed meeting together these past few weeks. It is interesting that as I have slowed down compared to my regular schedule, I’ve experienced more stillness than normal..... and it is hard for me to be still, but yet according to Psalm 46 .... I should be. Oh, there are still plenty of tasks for me to accomplish, and my mind still races at times, but there has definitely been a shift for me. It may sound a little crazy, but it has been peaceful, even in the middle of this storm in life that we are all going through. I think often about God, but a lot of times it is in the middle of running, doing and thinking of everything that needs to get done. I believe peace comes because I’m enjoying God and doing so intentionally. I think of the story in Luke10 when Jesus went to the home of Martha and her sister Mary. Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened to him teach while Martha became agitated because there was so much to do, and her sister was not helping. Martha made Jesus aware that there was much service needing to be accomplished, and she was doing it all alone. But the Lord answered her, “Martha , Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Like 10:41 ESV To sit with Jesus, and just listen or talk with him.... you will do that if he is as real as the clothes on your back. I once heard a story of a man who went to visit a dying friend. When he arrived, he started to sit in a chair beside the bed at which point the dying man said, “Please don’t sit there, that is where Jesus sits”. The man thought it a little odd, but honored the request of his friend. A day or so later the man returned to visit his friend only to find the doctor leaving and informing him the man had passed away the night before. The doctor said, “It was odd how I found him when I arrived, though.” “How so?” inquired the man. “I found him on the floor beside the empty chair with arms crossed and his head laying on his arms in the seat of the chair.” How real is Jesus to us today? I know; we know about him, and who he is.... God’s Son..., but how real is he to us? To know Father God, His Son , and the Holy Spirit should be more of a friendship relationship than sometimes we allow it to be. Let me explain.

JESUS AS A FRIEND : Here are some verses concerning a friend to keep in mind ..... A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is A FRIEND WHO STICKS CLOSER THAN A BROTHER. Proverbs 18:24 ESV I know the passage in Proverbs is in the Old Testament, but it describes perfectly who Jesus is to us as Christians..... a friend that sticks closer than a brother.” Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. John 15:13-214 ESV This is exactly what Jesus did for us.... laid down his life. Some say Jesus left us but that is not true, for he has sent the Holy Spirit to live inside all that are His. Jesus said, “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you for ever.” John 14:16 ESV Jesus said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5 ESV

BE A FRIEND TO JESUS: You will never out-do Jesus as a friend, but be a friend to him by showing him that you love Him. I enjoy spending time with people who are my true friends. Even when I may say something inconsiderate or behave as I shouldn’t, they are still my friend. It goes deeper than an acquaintance; it is devotion to one for whom you care much about, and they care the same towards you. Jesus definitely cares for you and loves you as a friend and as stated before ... sticks closer than a brother. How can I love Him as a friend?.... OBEY HIM... Jesus said, “ If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15 ESV When Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord you God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Matthew 22:36-37 ESV

APPLICATION.... ENJOYING GOD Find and read the promises of God toward you as a Christian. Make a point to become more personal with God everyday. Don’t make Him something that will happen to you in the future; make him a part of every day right now.....SLOW DOWN AND BE STILL...... INTENTIONALLY.... There will alway be more to get done than you will ever get done. As you enjoy the beauty of all that God has created... smile and tell him so. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of tea beside an empty chair and believe He is sitting right there for you and enjoy his company. Truth is .... he really is.
