Don’t Lose Focus..... August 23, 2020
If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. Colossians 3:1-2 ESV
Focus on what is important; everything else is just a distraction. The question is this: what do you deem to be important? The answer to this question depends upon whether you are a believer in Jesus Christ or in a world system controlled by man’s reasoning. Have you ever heard the statement, “Don’t be so heavenly minded that you are of no earthly good.” ? This statement is false for the Christian because the Bible teaches that the believer is to set their mind on things above. When we focused upon earthly things we can tend to become anxious. (Matthew 6:25-34) The Christian is instructed to... Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Matthew 6:33a ESV This instruction is teaching us to focus on what is important because, as stated above, everything else is a distraction. Let us ask three questions to determine if we are properly focused.
Have You Been Raised: If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Romans 8:11 ESV Those who are dead inside experience nothing concerning the gospel, but those who are alive experience the assurance of the gospel in Jesus Christ. It is not the knowledge of the gospel that causes a person to be saved but rather understanding your need and acceptance of the gospel. It is following Jesus Christ as a disciple of his teachings and living intentionally by his teachings. This gives evidence that you are in Christ.
Have You A Heavenly Mindset: Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6: 9-10 ESV "What is God’s will?" is a question that many people have asked, and "can a person really know God’s will?" The answer is yes, a person can know His most basic will concerning how they should live. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. Romans 6:12-13 ESV ......
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV...
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 ESV The person with a heavenly mindset lives and take seriously the verses above as well as many others concerning living intentionally for Christ. Have You Ceased Focusing On The Earthly: It is essential to keep heaven as your focus. This is to remember that Jesus, who died for us, is seated by His Father. This is, in short, the practice of being in his presence while still upon earth. It is becoming more heavenly minded and less earthly minded. The more we focus upon Jesus the less important the things of earth will be. Peace that passes all understanding is experienced when this becomes the mindset of the believer. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Isaiah 26:3 ESV The more you focus upon Christ the more you will experience Spiritual worship of your heavenly Father from within. Focusing upon worldly things will never give you this type of peace nor create a spirit of worship. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. John 4:23 ESV
Application: Be sure that Christ lives within you. Max Lucado made a statement that went something like this... God loves you just the way you are, but loves you too much to leave you that way. So when I say make sure that Christ is in you, I am saying what is the evidence of Christ’s presence in your life? The disciples that followed Jesus were not the same men three years later as when they first started following him. The same should be true of every person that is a true follower of Christ.
If you have been raised from being spiritually dead, walk as one who is alive. (Read Ephesians 2:1-10)
Make heaven your treasure...Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
As the hymn we sing teaches... Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of his glory and grace.
