Cleaning The Clutter Out Of Your Mind ..... November 1, 2020

Finally, brother, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 ESV I believe it is an understatement to say that our minds are bombarded with information, overloaded, and cluttered with thoughts, reasoning, opinions, and a multitude of worries depending upon who is involved in your circle of communication. Never in my lifetime has the verse, Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 ESV, been more applicable than today. One of the Devil’s tactics is to distract us from what is important by filling our minds with the.... “what if’s” ...over which we have no control. The truth is, what some perceive as being in control is often a false sense of security. Make no mistake, what dominates your mind is what controls you, and if it controls your mind, it is a stronghold. If fear dominates your mind then the stronghold of your mind is a prison that limits joy, peace, happiness, and other blessings. We choose the stronghold in our lives, whether it is fear or trust. Remember....... For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 2 Corinthians 10:4 ESV Therefore let scriptures, like the ones that follow, dominate your mind. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, MY STRONGHOLD. Psalm 18:2 ESV...... The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the STRONGHOLD of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1 ESV When God is the focus of your mind, he will become all that you need and will become your stronghold. In other words, the Lord is a mighty fortress of protection around your mind. I pray often for the Lord to protect my mind and thoughts. I do this because I can think about the “what if’s” and find them to be crippling instead of experiencing the joy, peace, and happiness of which I spoke earlier. Let me share some ways to battle the ungodly “what if’s” based on Philippians 4:8.

Think On Truth: As a disciple / Christian you must remember your position in Christ. In him you also, when you heard the word of TRUTH, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed by the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV. It is by the word of truth that we, as Christians, live. Jesus is that truth, and all that he is, has said, and has done was true then and is true now. His truth will never pass away; and as a Christian, know that you are sealed by the Holy Spirit, and the lies of the Devil have no power to change this truth. So live in peace, joy, happiness, and the blessing of his presence in your life.

Think On What is Honorable: Honor is something given to a person who is worthy of receiving it. The one who deserves the greatest honor, in our lives, is Jesus. In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy. 1 Peter 3:15a ESV... In him we live, move, and have our being. Act 17:28a ESV. When Jesus is the reason for living in your life, your life will be full of the many blessings that come from doing so. Think About Whatever is Just: In the world today, people demand what is just. Some of what people demand as justice, I sometimes fear would be better described as revenge. Make sure never to confuse the two. The Christian has received mercy and grace instead of what was truly deserved because of sin. (Romans 3:21-26). So when we think of justice think on Jesus who received the penalty for our sin that the justice of God might be accomplished. When we think about “whatever is just,” we can only think about God and the price he paid for our sin by sending Jesus to suffer the justice of our sin. This isn’t revenge... This is love.

Think About Whatever Is Pure: Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. John 1:29 ESV. John the Baptist saw Jesus as perfect.... pure. Jesus was the perfect lamb without a spot of sin. He was the pure lamb of sacrifice that God needed to redeem the world from sin. (John 3:16)

Think About What is Commendable: Commendable can be best described as deserving praise, which takes us to the last part of the verse... if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8. ESV There is no one more deserving of praise than God. Jesus was God’s Son..... the Word made flesh..... the living example of how we should live every day. We should remember that all the things Jesus did and is doing are worthy of praise.

Application: Hopefully, you can see what all of the above makes clear. Jesus should dominate our thoughts, actions, reasoning, and simply everything concerning who we are as a Christian. In him we live and move and have our being. Acts 17:28 ESV This will only be a reality in your life when he does just that— dominate your thoughts. Your thoughts should not just be to know about him, but your thoughts should direct your steps in everything you do. The first step is to ... Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 ESV, The next steps will happen more successfully and without stumbling as we exercise the first step.
