Choose….. January 17, 2021

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your father served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15 ESV

There is no doubt that we are living in tumultuous times. I have heard about such times from history past; but to live in it, is quite a different thing. The emotion and uneasiness I feel at times cannot be expressed with words, but I’m sure that because we are all living it, you might understand my sentiment. There are no easy answers. Opinions are readily available and strongly held. With this in mind and my mind constantly attempting to find answers as to how all this could end, I have come to this conclusion as I continue to seek calm in my soul: obviously, there is much I cannot control, but by the grace God, I can control my choices. The first and most important choice I will make …. I choose the Lord God. To choose God is to desire to serve him and keep oneself focused on him.

Your eyes:

The verse above makes the statement, “and if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord,” concerning the people’s choice. We can make the same choice. Oh, we word it differently by saying, “is there is a better way than God?” You see, that, in essence, is what the people were doing when they were shifting their eyes away from God and viewing other things offered by this world as a viable option. I encourage myself and all who read this to keep your focus on God alone. He alone is and has the answers for life and is the only place we can gain the wisdom and strength to live as we should. I will lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 ESV

Plenty of gods:

The logic and options offered by the world’s systems are more than plentiful. Today there is a system of logic and reason that, in and of itself, is not new. The world has always offered alternatives to God, but in the end, will leave one always searching for more. I believe it is the quest of the mind to search for reason and answers and when God does not make sense …… questions.. questions … questions!! Let me say, “if you can place God in a box of your understanding ….. then you made him small and you will continue to look for something you deem to be better.” There are some things I have learned from scripture over the years, one being what God spoke concerning himself…. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV.

But as for me:

What is your….. “As for me”? Every person without exception has an….. “As for me.” A person will choose this world or they will choose God. What would be the expectation if you were to focus on this world? If the focus is this world, then in essence you have made yourself your own god… thinking you know good from evil for you have nothing except your own reasoning and other people’s opinions from which to work. When we choose God, we ask ourselves, “How do we live up to his call to live holy?” This is when everything within you wants to live for him and search for answers from God rather than the world. This also means even when he doesn’t make sense by the world system/value, you continue to trust him. Choosing God means …. You will trust him even in dark times of life.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straights your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. Proverbs 3:5-7 ESV

This is not based upon a feeling but rather a choice to believe, follow, focus, trust, and all the other words that could describe what the words ….“As for me”… mean in your life. It is most important that, by faith, you believe in God alone, for …….. There is a way that seems right to man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12 ESV ………. CHOOSE WISELY!!!!!!
