CALM ..... April 26, 2019

When the cares on my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. Psalm 94:19 ESV

I dare say that there are a lot of people today who are filled with concerns which, left unchecked, can become overwhelming. It is imperative for the Christian to look to the word of God in order to calm the winds of worldly fears. On Wednesday evenings we come together via phone conferencing and pray for all those on our church prayer list. All those who are prayed for have specific needs that prompted someone to request they be added to this list. Why? Because there is comfort in knowing someone is praying for you, and there is a calming comfort in knowing God hears your prayers. It is looking to God to intervene in the circumstance of life and to bring us joy, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10b ESV This past Wednesday I also taught from the 23rd Psalm. This Psalm is calming, for it tells us what the Lord does for us and who he is in our lives. This is just one of many passages that can do this in our lives, but only if we believe. The words in the Bible are just words on a page if we do not believe. To believe is to trust that God will do all that he promised. To believe is to know that God has a plan even if we do not understand. To believe is to walk in relationship with Him as Savior, Lord, and King of our life. In short, believing should bring a calming sense to our soul.

Believe..... The Calming Of Trust: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God whose word I praise, in God I trust, I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me? Psalm 56:3-4 ESV: Reflect with me back to Psalm 23:4 ESV... Even though I walk thorough the valley of the shadow of death, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL, FOR YOU ARE WITH ME; your rod and staff, they comfort me. When we believe, trusting, we will be comforted in the fact that God is with us, and he is the protector of our soul. It does not say that He will keep us FROM the “valley of the shadow of death”; it says He will be “with me” on that journey. In our flesh we may experience difficulty and challenges, but in our soul... we trust knowing we are in His hand, and we are sealed in him by the Holy Spirit. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 ESV

Believe.....The Calming Of Knowing: To know God, and not just know about him, is crucial in experiencing calm. We come to know God more each day as we read how he has worked in the lives of others thoroughout scripture. There is much we may not understand as to the why’s and how's of God’s working, so we pray for insight, understanding, and teaching from the Holy Spirit. We can know without a doubt that God loves us! For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 ESV Knowing that God loves us enough to send us his only Son to die in our place, (Romans 5:8) is to know that he loves us with an un-comprehendible love. If he loves us with such love, will he not then care for us also? He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. Psalm 23:2-3 ESV

Believe.....The Calming Of Relationship: The Lord is my shepherd. Psalm 23:1a ESV..... Know that the Lord, he is God; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Psalm 100: 3 ESV If he is your shepherd, then you can be sure he will lead you, protect you, and supply all that you need. You are one of his sheep when you have believed God, confessed your sin seeking forgiveness, and received him as Savior and Lord through His Son Jesus. When that happens in your life then his Holy Spirit comes and lives in you, and thus a relationship with God is the result because you are now the temple of the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) As David wrote concerning being in the Lord’s presence..... I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23:6b ESV We can know we are in the Lord’s presence for he has sealed us with his presence by the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 1:13-14 )

Application: Believing is a must to experience calm. Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must BELIEVE that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. Hebrews 11:6 ESV There may be times when you find it hard to believe. You may need to pray the same prayer that a dad prayed when he’d brought his son, who had been afflicted since birth, to Jesus to be healed. And Jesus said to him, “ All things are possible for one who believes. Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I BELIEVE; HELP MY UNBELIEF! Mark 9:23-24 ESV Remember ... God is a God of love, mercy, and compassion. Jesus showed compassion when Thomas said, “ Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into his side, I will never believe. John 20:25 ESV Some eight days later Jesus entered a locked room and said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands, and put out your hand and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” John 20:27 ESV .... Thomas answered him, “ My Lord and my God!” John 20: 28 ESV May we aways believe and recognize him as... My Lord and my God! It is the only way you will ever experience ...calm... in the storms of life. Seek him and experience the reward of calm that comes from trusting, knowing, and fellowshipping with him. (Hebrew 11:6)
